February 2019 Newsletter

Valentine Parties – Valentine Parties for the Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten Classes will be held on Wednesday, February 13th and Thursday, February 14th.    Details about bringing in valentines are included in each class section of this newsletter.

Good Luck – We send our best wishes to Ms. Caitlin and Ms. Natalie who have returned to college after their winter breaks.  Ms. Caitlin is spending this semester in New York City where she is doing her student teaching.  Ms. Natalie is spending the semester studying in Croatia!

Nut Allergy Reminder –Nut allergies can be life-threatening.  Please do not send in any snacks to be shared with your child’s class that contain nuts or peanut butter.  If your child’s lunch contains peanut butter/nuts, please let your child’s teacher know in the morning.  Additionally, if your child eats anything containing nuts before he/she comes to school please be sure that you wash their hands and faces very well.  Thank you for taking the extra time to be sure all of our students are safe.

Community Helpers – Our Community Helpers Program has begun.  Any parent who would like to volunteer to visit with the students and talk about their occupation or hobby is encouraged to do so.  Please contact your child’s teacher.  We will soon receive a visit from a police officer.

Fall and Summer Registration – We have been receiving a number of inquiries and early registrations for our preschool and pre-kindergarten programs for September, 2019.  As in the past, we want to give the students who are currently enrolled at Little Folks (and their siblings) the first opportunity to re-enroll (or enroll) for the September 2019 session. Registration forms for the September Session as well as the Summer Enrichment Camp are being sent home this week.  Reminder: There is a referral discount for any family that refers another student to our program when that student registers and enrolls in our program.

Please return the registration forms to the school by Friday, February 15th so we will have a better idea of the number of openings for the programs.  After February 15th, September registration will be open to the general public and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Vacation –February 18th to 22nd is a public school vacation week.  Little Folks will be open.  If you wish to take this as your one week of vacation, please sign up before Friday, February 8th. Sign-up sheet is located on the office door.  The teachers’ schedule for this week must be in place by Monday, February 11th.  It is your responsibility to be sure your child’s name is on the list if you wish to take this as your vacation week.

Medicine/Flu Update – Parents are reminded to use discretion when sending a child to school with a cold, headache, cough, runny nose, etc.  If your child comes down with a fever, he/she must stay at home until they have had no fever for at least 24 hours without medication.  Additionally, if your child experiences vomiting he/she must stay at home for at least the following day after the episode.  A sick child will expose others, and will certainly not benefit from a group situation. Your child will be sent home if any symptoms of illness appear during the school day. If a child is sent home from school due to illness, he/she must remain at home the following day.

Woburn Kindergarten Registration – Kindergarten registration for the Woburn Public Schools is held during the month of March.  Parents of children who do not live in Woburn should contact their local school administration office for the registration dates for their towns.  In Woburn, Burlington, Reading, Stoneham, and Winchester, children must be 5 years old before September 1, 2019 in order to enter kindergarten in September, 2019. Appointments are required to register children for kindergarten.  Parents should contact their child’s school for an appointment.

Reminder – Little Folks will be closed on Monday, February 18th – Presidents’ Day.

Prekindergarten – Ms. Deb, Mrs. Donaghey, and Ms. Linda

Where did the month of January go?  Our theme this past month was Polar Animals.  We talked about which animals live in the Arctic (North Pole): polar bears, walrus, whales, snowy owls, seals, and caribou.    They learned how the animals survive in their environment and what they eat.  The children made some of the Arctic Animals and they are hanging up on our walls – to create our own Arctic Wonderland.  We also did an interactive story time with the book, The Mitten  by Jan Brett.  The children colored and cut their own props to use while we read the story.  Did they use them to tell you the story?

Some of the books we read this month were:  Animals of the Polar Region, The Magical Snowman, and Stella.

Our theme for the month of February will be Community Helpers.  We will also learn about Chinese New Year, Presidents’ Day, and the legend of the Ground Hog.

Academics: Shape- Heart; Color – Pink; Number – 6; Letters – Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss.  The children will continue to work on writing their names.

Art Projects: Presidents Lincoln and Washington; Chinese lanterns and dragons, Ground Hogs, and decorating for Valentine’s Day.

Our Valentine’s Day Parties will be on Wednesday, February 13th   and Thursday, February 14th.  Children may bring in Valentine cards to exchange with their friends.  A list of the children’s names will be sent home.  Please encourage your child to sign their own name.  A sign-up sheet will be posted if you would like to bring in goodies for the parties.

Have a great Valentine’s Day and a Fabulous February!!!!

Preschool – Ms. Stephanie, Mrs. Lilley, Ms. Angelee, and Ms. Nancy

February is here!  We are excited for Valentine’s Day and all of the fun that February brings!  January was a busy month.  We made beautiful snowmen, Arctic Animals, hat and mittens, snowflakes, penguins and cardinals.  We are continuing to work on recognizing the letters of the alphabet.  We worked on the letter Ww for Weather.   February will keep us just as busy.  We have lots of Valentine-themed projects planned.  We will be decorating our Valentine bags, making cookie-cutter prints, and decorating hearts.  We will be learning and reciting a new song, “Special Friend”.  For February, our shape is the heart and the color is pink.  Tracing will be introduced beginning with the circle shape.  We will be tracing circle, square, triangle, and rectangle shapes – in that order.  We will also be discussing Community Helpers.

Our Valentine’s Day parties will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, February 13th and 14th.  Please send in 28 cards with your child’s name on the back.  You do not need to address the envelopes.  A sign-up sheet will be by the door if you would like to bring in goodies for the parties.  Small, individual goodies are also welcome!!

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!!
